About this Episode
Ever walked into a room and started grading yourself before anyone said a word? Do I fit here? Do these people like me? Am I doing enough? Underneath most of our striving are three quiet questions: Do I belong? Am I loved? Am I enough? We chase the answers through careers, relationships, and accomplishments, and we feel it when those things come through. When they don’t, we feel it even more.
The trouble isn’t that we want those things. We were made to want them. The trouble is that we keep asking people and achievements to carry weight they were never built to hold. A job can’t tell you who you are. A spouse can’t settle your worth. And the finish line keeps moving, so the exhaustion never really lets up.
This talk goes back to Jesus' earliest days of ministry. Before the famous speeches, before the miracles, a voice said he was loved and that it was pleased with him. The idea at the heart of the message is simple and hard to live by: identity is received, not achieved. You don’t work your way into belonging. You start from it.
The message walks through what that could mean for the belonging we’re all looking for, for the shame that makes us hide, and for the worn-out feeling of always trying to prove ourselves. He also asks what might change in how we parent, lead, handle criticism, and respond to failure if we actually believed we were wanted before we performed.
Whether you’ve spent years in church or you’re just curious about what faith has to say about the deepest questions we carry, this one is for you.
